A 20 minute Virtual Reality documentary, unveiling the world of Sir Peter Wright’s The Nutcracker performed by the Birmingham Royal Ballet.

Sir Peter Wright's Nutcracker is one of the best-loved productions in ballet. We set out to preserve its magic and open it up to audiences anywhere in the world.

This immersive documentary goes behind the curtain to reveal what it takes to bring the ballet to the stage. Exclusive interviews with the people who make it happen are captured in immersive VR rather than flat 2D, so the viewer is backstage with them instead of watching from a distance.

We also went beyond film. The stage was captured using photogrammetry, creating a digital environment audiences can walk through and explore, and AR models bring the production into the viewer's own space.

The result is part documentary, part digital preservation: a lasting record of a landmark production, and a way in for people who may never get to see it from the stalls.
